Upon solving we get x= 10 and y = 4
Speed of the stream = 4 km/h

Then,

So,Distance covered by boat upstream =30

Given, Time for upstream and downstream = 4 hr 30 mins = 4 (1/2) hr
=> (Upstream Distance/ Speed upstream) + (Downstream Distance/ Speed downstream) = Total Time
=> [30 / (15 + x)] +[30 / (15 - x)] = 4 (1/2)
=> 30 [1/ (15 + x)] +[1/ (15 - x)] = 9 / 2
=> 30 [(15 - x) +(15 + x) / (15² - x²)] = 9 / 2
=> 30 [30 / (225 -x²)] = 9 / 2
=> 900 /(225 - x²) =9 / 2
=> 900 * (2 / 9) =(225 - x²)
=> 200 = 225 - x²
=> x² = 25
=> x = 5
Thus,speed of the stream = x = 5 km/hr

Formula:

=> Speed downstream = 5 + 1 = 6 km/hr
=> Speed upstream = 5 - 1 = 4 km/hr

Let the required distance be "x" km
Given , Time = 75 min = 75 / 60 hr

By formula: Time = Distance / Speed
=> (x/6) + (x/4) = 75 / 60
=> 10x / 24 = 75 / 60
=> x = (75 * 24) / (60 * 10)
=> x = 1800 / 600
=> x = 3 km

A boat sails 15 km upstream in 5 hrs. How long will it take to cover the same distance downstream, if the speed of current is one-fourth the speed of the boat in still water
